Geopolitical uncertainty rises as Venezuela enters transition

The capture of former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was the result of months of pressure from the United States. In December, US President Trump ordered a blockade of oil tankers travelling to and from the country, whilst also demanding it returned all “other assets that they had previously stolen from us”. Delcy Rodriguez has been sworn in as Venezuela’s new interim leader, although President Trump has previously stated that the US will “run” Venezuela until there is a “safe, proper, and judicious transition” of power.
